Many brands make these welding rods.

How to stick weld thin metal. A beveled edge is where you basically take a square (90 degree) edge and grind it down to a more rounded or sloping edge. The joint is filled with filler metal at the same time to make the weld stronger. The electrode is fully covered by a layer of flux.

Copper, brass, and aluminum all work well as backing for this. The ideal weld seam is approximately 2.5 times the electrode diameter. Use dc reverse polarity (the electrode will be positive while the base plate is negative).

Place the metal that you’ve cut out on top of your sheet metal and mark around the edge with a metal scribe. For butt joints the idea is to weld two thin sheets of metal side by side. This is a process when you join two pieces together at a vertical angle below 45.

This kind of welding calls for skills and experience in order to produce quality welds. Stick welding uses electricity to melt the filler metal rod or the electrode as it is properly referred to. I use 6010/6011 for thin sheet metal.

The problem is you can easily teat the joints apart or burn the joint edges. This welding is done by striking an electric arc in between the workpiece and a metal electrode. If the metal is around 3/16” inch long, we recommend you to use the stick welder.

The second thing is lots and lots of practice, the first thing you will need to master is striking an arc at very low amps and avoiding making holes in the sheet. A wire feed or tig welder is ideal for sheet metal but, we will assume that you don’t have one. Tips for stick welding thin metal.
