You should make sure to clean the wood very well first.

How to waterproof wood before painting. Pressed wood is porous and absorbs paint quickly. When you’re satisfied with the wood’s appearance, rinse the exterior from top to bottom with a garden hose. First you need to treat the knotts with knotting liquid other wise they will bleed once painted.

Mdf is a kind of material that will soak up enough of whatever is applied first. You may also go over it with fine steel wool to give it a silky surface. After this is complete, allow the waterproofing finish to dry for up to 24 hours.

You can apply the treatment by brush or by dipping. Stain before you seal, but beware that sealing will wet the color of the wood quite a bit. Use wrps only on dry, bare wood.

To waterproof wood, start by sanding it with fine grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections and prep the surface. Once you are done painting, you will also need to apply a sealer to make sure the paint won’t be washed away in the rain. Use paper towels and a hairdryer on low heat to remove as much moisture from the surface as you can.

Unseen dust and oils will prevent the clear polycrylic or polyurethane from bonding to the paint. Your best bet would be to apply two layers of a clear varnish once the painted wood has fully dried. If your wood is already painted, adding a layer of wood sealant works well for waterproofing.

Damage from humidity rainwater tends to make the wood warp, peel off, swell and even rot over time. If you plan to apply a clear sealer to a painted finish, thoroughly clean the surface prior to application. You will have to apply more than one coat of primer to seal the wood, because the first coat will be absorbed by the wood.
